Recently, I have noticed a little trend catching quickly regarding the neck-tie. And I am pretty sure it might have been set by the Italian designer, Brunello Cucinelli. It's in the style the tie is worn. Signore Cucinelli likes to wear his ties with the narrow-end falling longer than the wide-end, just like the gentlemen in the images below.

Personally, this is something I would never do. Never, on God's green earth, will you ever in your lifetime see me wear my ties like this. 50% of me is old fashioned, traditional. Periodically, you will see something new regarding menswear and style in general. The question here to ask is: Which trend is appropriate to follow?
There will always be opinions and critics on each side of the matter. Some may say following trends gets you to be a border-line hipster or simply full on. Naturally, you would be too afraid to pull off something new so you keep things safe. In turn, people will say, "Oh, being safe is so boring!" Gentlemen, let them say what they want to say. You must understand that the opinions of few do not automatically make it correct with the general public. Even between stylists, perspectives change; they will not agree on everything.
That's just it. Style has much to do with your personality as it does with your overall look. It's perfectly fine to keep things 'safe'. It's only 'boring' when you are unable to project your fine characteristics. Take another trend for an example. The whole colorful patterned socks men where today with their suits. Since it's the warmer months now, you will see men wearing suits without socks. By the way, if you are planning on doing that, make sure you use talcum powder in your shoes and dab a bit on your feet as well before you head out. You don't want smelly feet, that's just common sense. Back to the point. You don't have to wear colorful socks or go naked for your feet. You think men like Don Draper in the 60s pulled these kind of trends? No. A man like Don Draper can walk into a room with a simple tailored dark grey suit with either black or brown lace-ups and a solid muted color tie (tied traditionally) and own the room without saying a single word.
It's because a character like that has built up his reputation as a gentleman. It's because his ability to engage in meaningful conversations with others has become easy over plenty of practice. His proper manners and dealings with other human beings have been established. You can still look handsome and be charming in a simple, so called boring, suit or outfit. Now, I'm not saying don't follow the new tie trend. I'm saying it's OK not to! It's one thing when it is universally accepted to now wear dress shirts and polo shirts with short collars. It's part of fashion now, it evolves. But it doesn't mean you have to change your style or who you are. It's another thing to have your narrow-end fall longer than the wide-end. Not everyone is doing it because not everyone is comfortable doing it. It simply will not look good on some men...it is not their style.
I would never manipulate a situation to make someone wear something they are not comfortable in. As a stylist, it's not about me. It's about you. It's not about me working for you or you being a prospect client. It's about me working with you. The point is, trends or no trends, it's down to the fit and the comfort and how you will attempt to show the world the best part of you.
The true essence of style is the most alluring representation of your personality.
